1800 United States presidential election
The United States Presidential election of 1800 was the election of American president between Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Aaron Burr, and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. In the end, Jefferson and Burr both had 73 votes, Adams had 65, and Pinckney had 64.[1] Because Jefferson and Burr had the same number of votes, many people asked Alexander Hamilton for his choice. Hamilton chose Jefferson. Due to Hamiltons influence and his popularity, many voters changed to Jefferson and he was elected as the next US president. With the rules on elections at the time, Burr was chosen as Vice President as he was second in the election.[2] This rule was later changed and a new vice president was chosen.
