Andy Kim (politician)

Andrew Kim (born July 12, 1982) is an American Democratic politician who has been the United States Senator from New Jersey since 2024. He was the U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 3rd congressional district from 2019 to 2024.

On January 7, 2021, after the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol, he cleaning up garbage from the attack. A photograph of him cleaning became popular.[1][2][3] He gave the blue suit he wore in the photo to the Smithsonian Institution.[4]

Early life

Kim was born on July 12, 1982, in Boston, Massachusetts,[5] to Korean immigrant parents. Kim grew up in the Marlton section of Evesham Township, New Jersey.[6][7]

After two years at Deep Springs College, he transferred to the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 2004 with a degree in political science.[8][9]

U.S. Senate

2024 election

In September 2023, Kim announced he would run against incumbent New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, who was facing corruption and bribery charges. Menendez decided not to run for the Democratic nomination, and Kim ran against New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy. She dropped out in March 2024. Kim became the Democratic nominee in June 2024.[10] He beat Curtis Bashaw in the general election and is set to be the first Korean American senator, as well as New Jersey's first Asian American senator.[11][12]

Personal life

Kim married Kammy Lai, a tax attorney, in 2012.[13][14] They have two sons, born in 2015 and 2017.[15][16] His family lives down the street from his childhood home in Moorestown, South Jersey.[17]

Kim is a Presbyterian.[18]
