Arrondissement of Vichy

The arrondissement of Vichy is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Allier département. Its capital is the city of Vichy, a prefecture of the department.

History

When the department of Allier was created on 4 March 1790, Vichy was not one of ist districts. With the establishment of the arrondissements on 17 February 1800, Vichy was part of the arrondissements of Lapalisse.[1]

On 24 August 1941, the capital of the arrondissement of Lapalisse was moved from the city of Lapalisse to the city of Vichy that was then the capital of the French State.[1]

Geography

The arrondissement of Vichy is in the southeast of the Allier department and is bordered to the west and north by the arrondissement of Moulins, to the east by the Saône-et-Loire department (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region), to the southeast by the Loire department, to the south by the Puy-de-Dôme department and to the southwest by the arrondissement of Montluçon.

It has an area of 2,016 square kilometres (778 square miles),[2] and 122,267 inhabitants, the arrondissement of Allier with more people living there, and a population density of 60.6 inhabitants/km².[3]
