Blaye
Blaye (Occitan: [Blaia] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France. It is one of the five sub-prefectures of the department.

Geography
Blaye is on the right bank of the Gironde estuary (which is some 3 km (1.9 mi) wide at this point), 56 km (35 mi) to the southeast of Bordeaux.
The commune has an area of 6.4 km2 (2.5 sq mi),[2] and its average altitude is 21 m (69 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 8 m (26 ft).[3]

The climate of Blaye is Marine West Coast Climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfb), with mild winters and warm summers.
Population
The inhabitants of Blaye are known, in French, as Blayais (women: Blayaises).[4]
With a population of 4,769,[5] Blaye has a population density of 743 inhabitants/km2.

Administration
Blaye is a sub-prefecture of the Gironde department. It is also the capital of the arrondissement of Blaye and the administrative centre (French: [chef-lieu] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) of the canton of L'Estuaire with 41,046 inhabitants (2014).[6]
It is part of the intercommunality Blaye (French: [Communauté de communes de Blaye] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)).
