Gema Victoria Hassen-Bey González
Gema Victoria Hassen-Bey González (born May 5, 1967 in Madrid) is a wheelchair fencing athlete from Spain and journalist. She is a Category B fencer. She has a disability: she uses a wheelchair. She became a paraplegic when she and her family were in a car accident. She is a journalist. [1]
She fenced at the 1996 Summer Paralympics. She finished third in the women's sword. She fenced at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. She fenced at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. She fenced at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China.[1]
She intends to become the first woman in a wheelchair to reach the top of Kilimanjaro, although before it ascended in 2017 to the top of Spain, the Teide on the island of Tenerife, of 3,718 meters.[2] Gema Hassen-Bey became the first Paralympic athlete in the world in a wheelchair to reach 3,000 meters altitude with only the momentum of her arms. Initially, Gema wanted to reach the top of Teide, although, due to weather conditions, it could not meet this objective.[3]
