Martti Ahtisaari

Martti Oiva Kalevi Ahtisaari (pronounced Loudspeaker.png [ˈmɑrt:i ˈoivɑ ˈkɑleʋi ˈɑhtisɑ:ri] (info • help)) (born 23 June 1937) is a Finnish politician. He was the 10th President of Finland between 1994 until 2000. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008. He is also a United Nations diplomat and mediator. He is known for his international peace work.

Nobel Prize

Ahtisaari was a UN Special Envoy at the Kosovo status process negotiations. These negotiations were aimed at resolving a long-running dispute in Kosovo. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. In October 2008, Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts".[2] The Nobel statement said that Ahtisaari has played a prominent role in resolving many conflicts in Namibia, Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq, among other areas.[3]

Health

In September 2021, Ahtisaari was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.[4]
