Kollam

Kollam (Malayalam:കൊല്ലം) (known to the Portuguese as Quilon, pronounced koy-lon) is a city and a municipal corporation in Kollam district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is 71 kilometres (44 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). It is also the headquarters of the Kollam District, one among the 14 districts in Kerala. To the south is Thiruvananthapuram district, to the north is Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, to the east is Tamil Nadu and to the west by the Arabian Sea.

  India in 1320 CE. The Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari area in the southernmost tip of Indian subcontinent, which was the main seat of Ay dynasty and later Venad dynasty, was under the influence of the Pandya dynasty.

  Thambiran Vanakkam was printed at Kollam, the capital of Venadu in 1578, during the Portuguese Era. It holds the record of the first book printed in any Indian language. It was written in the language Lingua Malabar Tamul, which was spoken in Southern Kerala (Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram area) during the medieval period.

  Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque established Portuguese rule in Kollam (Portuguese: Coulãocode: pt is deprecated ), which lasted from 1502 until 1661.

  Kollam Canal or Quilon Canal is a 7.7 km long canal system passing through the city of Kollam, India. The Kollam canal was built on 1880 and is a bustling part of 560 long Thiruvananthapuram–Shoranur canal(TS Canal) waterway project, also used as a means for transport of both people and goods, as an avenue for leisure and the water even used for irrigation and drinking.
