Sérgio Mendes

Sérgio Santos Mendes (February 11, 1941 – September 5, 2024) was a Brazilian Bossa nova musician. Mendes was born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His career began in 1961. He became well known for his band Brasil '66. He had over 55 releases and was known for playing bossa nova.[1] He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2012 as co-writer of the song "Real in Rio" from the animated movie Rio.[2]

Mendes died at a hospital in Los Angeles, California on September 5, 2024 from problems caused by long COVID at the age of 83.[3]
