The movie took in over $960 million overall. This is more than both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. It is the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013 and the 34th highest-grossing film of all time.[1] The film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Lee Pace, and other casts while Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom and Stephen Fry have first appeared.

Reception worldwide

Outside North America, The Desolation of Smaug was released internationally on 16,405 screens.[2] The film earned $135.4 million in its opening weekend. Its largest openings occurred in China ($33.0 million),[3] Germany ($19.0 million) and the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($15.2 million).[4] It topped the box office outside North America on four consecutive weekends[5] and five in total.[6] It is the highest-grossing film of 2013 in many European countries.
