Eleanor Rosalynn Carter (born Eleanor Rosalynn Smith; August 18, 1927) is the wife of former President Jimmy Carter and served as First Lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981. When her husband was Governor of Georgia, she served as First Lady of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. She was active in politics during her White House years, she sat in on Cabinet and policy meetings and also, serving as her husband's closest adviser. She also served as an envoy abroad, most notably to Latin America.

Early life and education

She was born in Plains, Georgia. She was the eldest of the four children of Allethea "Allie" Murray Smith (1905–2000) and Wilburn Edgar Smith (1896–1940). She attended Plains High School and graduated salutatorian. After completing her schooling, she studied at Georgia Southwestern College, Americus, Georgia.

Rosalynn's father died of leukemia when she was 13.


On July 7, 1946, she and Jimmy Carter were married.
