History
When the Nord department was created on 1790, the arrondissement of Dunkirk, as arrondissement of Bergues, was part of that original department.[1]
Geography
The arrondissement of Dunkirk is the most northern of the arrondissements of the Nord department. It borders with Belgium to the east, the Lille arrondissement to the southeast and the Pas-de-Calais department to the south and west. The North Sea is to the north of the arrondissement.
The arrondissement of Dunkirk is the largest arrondissement of the department with an area of 1,442.7 km2 (557.0 sq mi).[2] It has a population of 378,499 inhabitants for a population density of 262.4 inhabitants/km2.[3]
