The Barelvi movement (Urdu: بَرَلَوِیْ جَمَاَعَتْ) also known as Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat is a revivalist movement in the Sunni Islam in South Asia.[1] It is influenced by Sufism and named after Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, a Hanafi Islamic scholar from Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.[2][3][4][5] People connected with the movement follows Hanafi and Shafi’i schools of jurisprudence and Maturidi and Ash’ari school of theology.[1]
Beliefs
Barlevis believe in the calling upon saints and prophets for help.[6] They also believe that the Prophet Muhammad was made out of light (in a literal sense).[7][8] Barlevis also make takfir on the 4 Deobandi Elders due to Ahmad Raza Khans Fatwa on them.[9][10]
