The hurricane formed from a tropical wave on September 3. It became a subtropical cyclone in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm soon became worse as it moved. On September 5, the storm turned north and became a hurricane. Its highest winds were 75 mph (120 km/h). There was a barometric pressure of 995 mbar (hPa; 29.38 inHg).
