Abkhazia (Georgian: აფხაზეთი/Apkhazeti) is a partially recognized republic in the Caucasus. As of 2006, about 157,000-190,000 people lived there. The capital is Sukhumi. Most countries consider Abkhazia to be part of Georgia. It is recognized only by Russia, Nauru, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Tuvalu.
Abkhazia covers an area of about 8,600 square kilometres (3,300 sq mi) at the northwest part of Greater Caucasus. The Caucasus Mountains to the north and the northeast divide Abkhazia from the Russian Federation.
