History
European Commission and USB-C
On 23 September 2021, European Commission began looking into a plan to make all devices in the European Union such as iPhone to use USB-C chargers.[18][19] Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple would not come with Lightning connector by 2023.[20][21] At the time of those claims, Apple was thinking about changing from Lightning connector to USB-C because an EU proposal was very likely to become a law.[22] The European Parliament added a new law in October 2022 and launched it in December 2024 as iPhone 16 series released.[23][24] It updated the Radio Equipment Directive to say that all small and medium devices must have USB-C. Apple said it would follow the rules later that month.[25][26] The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus became the first iPhone to use USB-C.[27]
Making and discontinuation
On 12 September 2023, it was announced that Tata Group made some of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in India to be sold around the world on the launch day for the first time.[28][29] On 9 September 2025, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus stopped selling after Apple talked about the iPhone 17 series.[30][31]
Satellite connectivity
On 12 September 2023, Apple launched the Roadside Assistance via satellite for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.[32] On 20 September 2024, Apple added message via satellite feature to iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus with iOS 18 and later.[33] On 9 September 2025, Apple give another year of free satellite connectivity for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus from countries that support satellite connectivity until November 2026.[34][35]
Sales
In 2024, the normal iPhone 15 reached 3% of 1.22 billion smartphone sold, which is 36.6 million units.[36][37][38] The iPhone 15 did not sell well in China as the iPhone 14 did because many Chinese people are buying phones from local phone companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi.[39][40]
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus cost more in India than in the United States and the United Arab Emirates due to local manufacturing.[41][42] Both models cost more in Europe than in the United States due to a higher Value-added tax of 20-25% included in EU prices.[43] On 7 January 2025, renewed iPhone 15 models was launched for the first time in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.[44]
Problems
Temperature
Some people using the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus said the phones were getting hot during use.[45][46] It was reported that apps like Uber and Instagram could be making the phone get hot.[47][48] Apple warn the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus users in China to stop using Android USB-C charger to stop getting hot.[49][50] Apple said it would fix this during update to iOS 17.0.3.[51][52]
CarPlay and USB-C
Some people using the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus said the phones not working with CarPlay.[53] It was reported that using USB-A to USB-C cables in the car can cause problems.[54] Apple said it would fix some problems but it remaining problems for most.[55]
Design
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have big design changes since the iPhone 12. They have the Dynamic Island, which replaces the notch that was first launched on iPhone X.[56] They also have a ceramic shield for screen, matte glass for back and aluminium for side that are hard to break if dropped.[57] They became the first entry-level iPhones since the iPhone XR to not come with PRODUCT(RED) color option. They come with five colors such as blue, pink, yellow, green and black.[58] The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are the last iPhones to have the diagonal back cameras layout that started with iPhone 13.

Battery and charging
The iPhone 15 lasts for up to 20 hours of playing video and up to 80 hours of playing audio, while the iPhone 15 Plus lasts for up to 26 hours of playing video and up to 100 hours of playing audio.[63][64] The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus can limit the battery charging to make the battery longer over time.[65] They can also see manufacture and first use dates.[66] They made the battery lifespan longer than iPhone 14 and older.[67] The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus can users tell how many charging counts are on its battery.[68] Both models increased battery lifespan from 500 to 1,000.[69] The iPhone 15 has a 3,349mAh battery capacity. The iPhone 15 Plus has a 4383mAh battery capacity. They have a 20W wired charger, 15W wireless charger and a USB-C port.[70]

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have two back cameras: a 12MP ultra wide camera and a 48MP main camera. For the front, there is a 12MP camera for selfie. They also have many video recordings such as 4K at 24fps/25fps/30fps/60fps, 1080P HD at 25fps/30fps/60fps and 720P at 30fps. The digital photo zoom goes up to 10x, 2x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, 4x optical zoom ranges and the digital photo zoom goes up to 6x.[71]

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have USB-C 2.0. This can transfer the data at 480 megabits per second.[72] The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are much faster. They use USB-C 3.2. This can transfer the data at 10 gigabits per second.[73] All iPhone 15 models have a DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C video output with HDR up to 4K resolution.

Software
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus ran the iOS 17.0 when they launched. Apple warned the iPhone 15 users must update to the iOS 17.0.2 before transferring data from the older iPhones using standard "Quick Start" method because there are problems when transferring data such as stuck at Apple logo screen forever.[79] They could upgrade to other versions like iOS 18 or iOS 26.[80][81][82] On 29 April 2024, Apple will give at least 5 years of security updates for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus to follow the rules of the United Kingdom Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act.[83] In October 2024, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus cannot use the Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 because they have an Apple A16 Bionic chipset; Apple Intelligence works only on an Apple A17 Pro chipset or later and 8GB RAM or later for iPhones, which the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and later have it.[84]
With iOS 18 released, users who using the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus can choose the more battery charging limit options to stop charging like 85%, 90% and 95%.[85] On 12 June 2024, Apple added slow charging warning in iOS 18.[86][87] The iPhone 15 models with iOS 18 can show time when battery died.[88][89]
