Joe Biden's tenure as the 47th Vice President of the United States began with his first inauguration on January 20, 2009, and ended on January 20, 2017, He took office following his victory over nominee vice president Sarah Palin of the Republican Party, in the 2008 presidential election, Four years later, in the 2012 presidential election, he defeated Paul Ryan of the Republican Party, to win re-election. Biden was succeeded by Republican Mike Pence, who won the 2016 presidential election.
